Alleviating potential Danger, protecting the Climate and generating Energy


Methane is the product of the geochemical transformation (carbonification) of organic substances to form coal. The methane and carbon dioxide produced during the carbonification process (starting around 300 million years ago) exist as free gases in cracks, crevices and pores, and as adsorbed gases trapped in coal seams and the adjoining rock. When coal is mined underground, the released methane gas forms a highly explosive mixture when combined with air. Extracting the mine gas is of vital importance to safety and the environment. The potential danger due to the diffuse emission of mine gas and its main constituent methane (25 to 60%) is reduced by efficiently using it for power generation.

The gas can be used to replace conventional fuels, preventing the emission of methane into the atmosphere. The use of combined heat and power CHP plants for the generation of electrical energy from mine gas is an established practice, and will continue to grow in importance in the future due to the free availability of gas, the fact that problematic flaring is no longer necessary, and that in many instances the heat generated can also be used effectively for many purposes.
